There’s a new browser emerging. That new browser build by Google are called Chrome. It’s using V8 virtual machine technology and Webkit layout engine (same as Safari). Beta version of Chrome can be downloaded here.

Chrome has a simple and clean interface. By default, it shows a page containing nice most visited sites, bookmark list, dan recent closed tabs list. If you take a closer look, the front page adopting Opera’s Speed Dial page dan Flock’s My World page.

The toolbar are very minimalist and much like Safari, but Chrome doesn’t have a menu bar. Menu bar are replaced with two buttons on the right of address bar (much like IE7). The ’stop’ button is placed in unusual place. The ’stop’ button are placed near ‘refresh’ button in most browser, but in Chrome it placed as subtitute for ‘go’ button.

Since Chrome is still in Beta version, it still utilize the Webkit well. Some website are not well shown using Chrome but it well shown using Safari. But on the time i test it, the websites look fine opened by Chrome, maybe it’s still unstable when the bandwidht fluctuating or even low.

Chrome have a low memory consumption which is very impressive. Chrome also can cut its memory consumption when minimized (same as Opera). No wonder since Chrome doesn’t have many features. The most annoying part from Chrome is its installer. It’s a downloader script that sometimes doesn’t work well while installing in some condition.

Chrome pass in Acid2 test, you can see the yellow smiley clearly.

Chrome got 79 score on Acid3 test. It seems that highest score this test is still belong to Opera.

Although Chrome is still in Beta version, it shows some potential. Because of its simplicity and low memory consumption, Chrome is suited for people who just browsing and doesn’t need any fancy features. I’ll try to do another review when the full-version arrived.
